Types of Handicapped Services
There are all kinds of handicapped services you can use to make life with a disability easier. A good place to start would be the website of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA is a rich resource of information that includes services available for disabled individuals. There are so many different services it can be overwhelming when searching for resources useful to you. The ADA makes it easier by categorizing various things and pointing you in the right direction.
The type of service or services you may require is completely personalized. For example, those who are blind may want a guide dog or car service. Those with limited mobility or other disabilities may need someone to clean house, run errands, cook and clean, even help bathe and dress them. There are agencies that employ qualified individuals who do all of these things. As you can see, there are plenty of choices when it comes to services for the disabled.
Some services are practical, such as job placement services for disabled individuals or individuals with mental retardation. Others help provide much-needed education. There are also support groups for the disabled where they are able to socialize and interact with one another. And, there are support groups for family members of the disabled as well. In addition to in person groups there are now a plethora of online groups and forums of this type.
Socialization is important for everyone, including the disabled. Not only is peer socialization good for morale and mental health, it is a good source of support. Many handicapped people feel very alone until they are able to meet others who suffer from the same disability. Caretakers also need support and can find it by socializing with other caretakers. Some groups even host fun events for members to enjoy.
Handicapped services also include things like mandatory ramps and handicapped parking spaces. Those with disabilities should attempt to understand as much as they can about their condition, and what services would best benefit them. If the disabled person is unable to do so, then friends and family can be very helpful in this effort. There are also professional advocates, counselors and others who can help provide the right services for disabled persons. In short, there are many ways a disabled individual can receive lots of practical and emotional support.
