Improving Handicap Mobility
There are many disabilities that interfere with one's ability to move around. Whether the disability is short or long term, or even for a lifetime, there are ways of improving handicap mobility. It all depends on the type of disability one has. For those injured in an accident or from some other cause, improving mobility may include lots of physical therapy and the use of walkers, canes or crutches until full mobility is regained. Others may need even more help, which usually comes in the form of a wheelchair, the most common mobility device for the disabled.
There are two main types of wheelchairs, manual and electric. Everyone knows what a manual wheelchair looks like. These chairs are powered by the person sitting in them by pushing the top of the wheels forward or by someone pushing the chair from behind. They are used in hospitals to transport patients from one area to another. The manual wheelchair is a good choice for someone with good upper body strength and a temporary disability but it may not be the best choice for someone with a long term disability.
Another method of improving range of movement in the disabled is with a handicap accessible vehicle. Usually, this will be a van or minivan. Popular automobile manufacturers make vans that can be converted to be handicapped accessible. This not only means more room for equipment such as a wheelchair but also a ramp lift. This is a ramp that goes up and down to allow the wheelchair bound to enter and exit the vehicle easily. The ability to get around comfortably and safely via vehicle can do a great deal for the disabled, the least of which is boosting their morale and getting them where they need to go.
The subject of improving handicap mobility is one that should be discussed with a medical professional. Often a disabled person will be referred to a specialist or therapist who works with people who are affected with that particular disability. This specialist can recommend the best methods of increasing mobility whether it is a wheelchair, walker, exercises or other means. It is often a difficult task for a disabled person to improve their range of mobility and control, but in many cases it can be done to a certain degree under the supervision of a medical professional.
